The Ultimate 5-Day Whitefish, Montana Itinerary

Local favorites, insider tips, mountain adventures, and the perfect place to stay.

If you’re planning a trip to Whitefish, Montana, chances are Glacier National Park is already on your list. While Glacier deserves every bit of the attention it receives, there is so much more to Northwest Montana than the national park.

From scenic drives and mountain adventures to local restaurants and relaxing days by the water, Whitefish is the perfect destination for travelers who want equal parts relaxation and exploration.

Better yet, you can experience it all while staying at North Star Ranch, a private 40-acre retreat that feels worlds away from the crowds while still keeping you close to everything you’ll want to see.

Located just 15 minutes from downtown Whitefish, 20 minutes from Whitefish Mountain Resort, and approximately 40 minutes from Glacier National Park’s West Entrance, North Star Ranch provides an ideal home base for your Montana adventure.

Here’s how we’d spend five unforgettable days exploring Whitefish and the surrounding Flathead Valley.

Day 1

Arrive, Unplug, and Experience Montana’s Big Sky

Drive time from Glacier Park International Airport: Approximately 20 minutes

After landing, skip the urge to immediately start sightseeing. One of the best parts of visiting Montana is giving yourself permission to slow down.

Check into North Star Ranch and spend the afternoon exploring the property. With open meadows, forested areas, mountain views, and plenty of room to spread out, it’s easy to understand why families and groups choose the ranch for reunions, retreats, and relaxing mountain getaways.

Insider Tip Montana sunsets often steal the show. Grab a drink and head outside about 30 minutes before sunset to watch the sky turn shades of orange, pink, and purple. For a beautiful lakeside view, head to City Beach and watch the sun set over Whitefish Lake.

For dinner, head into downtown Whitefish and spend a casual first evening exploring the town’s walkable downtown district. Blackstar Brewery and Thirty Eight, which is open seasonally, are great options for a relaxed meal and drinks.

Distance to downtown Whitefish: Approximately 8 miles | 15 minutes
Day 2

Experience Glacier National Park Beyond the Postcard

Distance from North Star Ranch to West Glacier: Approximately 25 miles | 40 minutes

No first trip to Whitefish is complete without visiting Glacier National Park.

Most visitors head straight for Going-to-the-Sun Road, and while it is absolutely worth the drive, arriving early can make all the difference. During the summer, plan to leave North Star Ranch before 7:00 a.m. to get ahead of traffic and parking challenges.

Suggested Glacier National Park Stops

  • Lake McDonald
  • Avalanche Lake Trail
  • Logan Pass
  • Hidden Lake Overlook
  • St. Mary Lake
Insider Tip Pack layers, even when visiting in July or August. It may be 80 degrees in Whitefish and significantly cooler at Logan Pass.

Bring a picnic lunch with you. Food options inside the park can be limited and may involve long waits during peak season.

Bear spray is also an important item to carry while hiking and exploring Montana’s outdoor areas. Make sure everyone in your group knows how to safely use it.

After a full day in Glacier, return to the ranch and enjoy a quiet evening under the stars. With limited light pollution, stargazing at North Star Ranch can be just as memorable as the day’s adventures.

Day 3

Enjoy Whitefish Lake, Downtown Whitefish & Local Favorites

Distance to Whitefish Lake: Approximately 10 miles | 15 minutes

Today is all about experiencing Whitefish like a local.

Start your morning at Whitefish Lake. Rent a paddleboard or kayak, go for a swim, or simply relax along the shoreline. The lake’s clear water and mountain backdrop make it one of the most beautiful places in the Flathead Valley.

Explore the Flathead Valley Like a Local

One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is spending their entire trip inside Glacier National Park. Some of Northwest Montana’s most memorable experiences happen outside the park.

Flathead Lake is one of Montana’s most impressive natural attractions and a favorite warm-weather destination for locals and visitors.

Spend your day:

  • Swimming
  • Boating
  • Visiting lakeside towns
  • Sampling local cherry products during the summer

Option 2: Explore Bigfork

This charming lakeside community is known for its small-town atmosphere and beautiful surroundings.

  • Art galleries
  • Boutique shopping
  • Waterfront dining
  • Scenic walking trails

Option 3: Go Horseback Riding or Fly Fishing

Travelers looking for a classic Montana experience can book a guided horseback ride or spend the morning fly fishing on one of the region’s rivers and streams.

Insider Tip When visiting in late summer, ask locals where huckleberries are in season. Montana’s favorite wild berry finds its way into everything from ice cream and coffee to cocktails, jam, and pie.
