Group 2 7 min ReadYour Itinerary for a Dream Winter Trip to Breckenridge Winter in Breckenridge is an experience unlike any other. While many travelers visit us for our world-renowned ski terrain, there is so much to explore beyond the slopes. If you prefer to stay off the ski runs and experience other parts of our beautiful town, this guide is just for you. We’ve assembled a 5-day itinerary with a mix of in-town activities and epic outdoor adventures (and, of course, included some of the best food recommendations our mountain town offers.) Now’s the time to start planning your winter escape, and we’re here to help! Your Perfect Home Base – Peaks Paradise To make your winter getaway even more magical, you’ll need the perfect retreat to return to after your daily adventures. Peaks Paradise is an idyllic Breckenridge vacation rental offering all the comforts you could ask for. This spacious 5-bedroom home is ideal for groups or families looking for a luxurious, private stay. With its cozy living spaces, fireplace, and large windows offering stunning mountain views, you’ll have the ultimate relaxation spot. And after a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than soaking in your very own hot tub, unwinding under the starry night sky. Peaks Paradise also features a gourmet kitchen, making it easy to prepare meals at home, and multiple outdoor spaces to take in the crisp winter air. It’s the perfect home base to enjoy both the serenity and excitement of Breckenridge. Day 1 – Explore the Town Stroll Historic Downtown Breckenridge After a day of traveling, you’ll love Peaks Paradise’s convenient location, just a short drive from Breckenridge’s charming Main Street. Starting your trip at a slower pace is always a good idea, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring.Take it easy by exploring Breckenridge’s historic Main Street. We suggest grabbing a coffee at a local shop like the Crown before heading out to browse the local boutiques and unique stores that line Main Street. It’s a perfect way to get a feel for the town and its history! Visit Sapphire Point Overlook While you could definitely spend all day perusing the shops on Main Street, you may also want to venture out to take in some scenic sights. Take a quick drive out of town to Sapphire Point Overlook to get stunning views of Dillon Reservoir and the surrounding snow-covered peaks. It’s a great place for a group shot with your vacation buddies. It’s important to note that while the road leading to Sapphire Point and the parking lot are maintained during the winter, the short path to the lookout point will likely be snowy and potentially icy. Make sure you wear appropriate shoes and bring plenty of layers, hats, gloves, and scarves – it will be windy at the top! Enjoy a Meal at Breckenridge Distillery To wrap up the first day, enjoy happy hour or dinner at Breckenridge Distillery. Dubbed the world’s highest distillery, this establishment offers award-winning spirits, one-of-a-kind signature cocktails, and tasty eats. Take advantage of their happy hour specials on select cocktails and small plates/entrees when you visit from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. If there are any whiskey connoisseurs in your group, you can also schedule a 30-minute, behind-the-scenes tour of the distillery on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Day 2 – Get Ready for an Outdoor Adventure Take a Guided Snowshoe Tour After a restful first day, it’s time to get adventurous! Strap on some snowshoes and get outside to immerse yourself in a winter wonderland. There’s no need to worry if you haven’t tried snowshoeing before. There are several local services in the area that offer guided tours that will teach you how to appropriately use your gear. Depending on your comfort level and the strength of adventurous spirit, there are a couple different options to choose from: Breckenridge Nordic Center: This center offers 75-minute snowshoe tours led by knowledgeable guides who can help you master your snowshoes and tell you more about the ecology and history of the area. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can also rent equipment and explore without a guide on the center’s 18 miles of snowshoe trails. Colorado Adventure Guides: If you’re looking for a more in-depth excursion, this company offers half-day tours (4 hours) and full-day tours (6 to 8 hours). This additional time means you’ll be able to explore further and experience even more beauty in the mountains. After a day of snowshoeing or enjoying Breckenridge’s outdoor wonders, you’ll love coming back to Peaks Paradise for a much-needed rest. Nothing beats easing tired muscles in the hot tub as you soak in the scenic surroundings. Dinner at Tin Plate Pizza A day spent in the great outdoors calls for a tasty meal to refuel. We suggest checking out one of our local pizzerias, like Tin Plate Pizza. Located in a 138-year old mining cabin, this restaurant is steeped in local history, having been the location of town’s gold assayer. Now, the fully-restored cabin serves up artisan pizzas made with local ingredients. It’s a must-stop dinner spot on your Breckenridge vacation. Day 3 – Dive into the Fun of Breckenridge’s Historic District Take a Historic Tour or Visit a Museum On day three, we’re learning all about the history of Breckenridge. Take your pick from any of the town’s historical tours and museums. The Walk Through History Tour will take you through six blocks in the town’s historical district and provide exciting tales on how the town came to be and what life was like when it was first established. Delve into the spookier history of the town with a Ghostly Tales Tour featuring chilling stories of historical figures that met tragic ends and are thought to still haunt the area. You can also visit one of the town’s many museums, including the Edwin Carter Museum and the Barney Ford Museum, that will educate you on important figures in Breckenridge’s history. Sledding at Carter Park If you have some extra time in the afternoon, get outside by visiting Carter Park. This is the one of the only places in town where you can sled – and it’s free! Get a hot chocolate at a cafe on Main Street (or fill an insulated mug before heading out), and let the kids (and adults!) enjoy some outdoor fun. Dinner at Downstairs at Eric’s This is a popular dinner destination in Breckenridge – and for good reason. This family sports bar dishes out traditional American favorites, like wings, burgers, soups, and pizzas with a side of on-tap brews. Plus, the kiddos will love spending time in the arcade that features 27 different games to enjoy. Day 4 – Mush a Team of Huskies Fuel Up with Breakfast Get your day started with a hearty breakfast at Blue Moose to fuel up for another day of adventure. Enjoy traditional breakfast faves like omelettes, bagels, pancakes, french toast and specialty coffees. You’ll need all your energy for a fun adventure later in the day. Become a Musher and Lead a Dog Sled Team Good Times Adventures offers you the chance to take part in this once-in-a lifetime activity. Their guided tours take you on a 6-mile adventure on the meandering trails of the Swan River Valley. You’ll start with a short instruction on how to run the sled and lead the huskies on your team. Then, everyone in your group of 6 will get the chance to lead the team and experience mushing the dogs forward on the trail. Day 5 – Say So Long to Breckenridge with One Last Snowy Adventure Take a Scenic Sleigh Ride On your final day, you’ll have time for one last winter excursion before you have to leave our winter wonderland. Take a scenic sleigh-ride on a horse-drawn sleigh through the White River National Forest. Golden Horseshoe Sleigh Rides offers several different ride options, including a hot cocoa ride with other guests. There’s even an option to indulge in a private, romantic sleigh ride for two. Dinner at Rootstalk End your trip with a special dinner at Rootstalk on Main Street. This upscale modern American restaurant is the perfect way to bring your adventure to a close. Enjoy an elevated dining experience and unique dishes brought to you by a local chef born and raised in the area. Start Planning Your Winter Getaway Our charming mountain community is wonderful in every season, but there’s something extra special about visiting us in the winter.
