Spend a few hours or even a whole day browsing in Truckee’s pedestrian shopping village. From designer boutiques to specialty shops, Truckee Village offers a variety of shopping options for all tastes and budgets.

Sharpen your blades because when Truckee’s temps dive, it’s time to hit (or swizzle or spin) on the ice. Stay in town and head to the Truckee Ice Rink located only half a mile from downtown and serviced by the town’s free shuttle. Sample the other rinks in the area at Northstar, Everline, and the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park for more on-ice thrills or laid-back laps.

Maybe skiing isn’t a fav–that doesn’t mean a no-snow, no-thrills getaway in Truckee. Plenty of tubing options are close by, including hills at Tahoe Donner, Soda Springs, Sugar Bowl, Northstar, and Palisades Resorts. Check out the slopes by day or book a time for Disco Tubing at night for a full sensory experience.

More snow equals more time to fly through Truckee, just maybe not how you think. Rent a fat tire bike and traverse trails on these bikes with larger tires designed to ride over snow. Outfitters in town rent fat tire bikes and you can also head to Northstar to test out the resort’s trails.

History meets shopping meets culture meets all that California beauty. Downtown Truckee excels where it counts. Taste your way through the cafes, bars, and restaurants and sample some local craft brews either apres ski or outside in the sunshine. You can soak in more than the sun when you stop by cultural spots like the Museum of Truckee History or amble through the streets with a walking tour. Check the calendar and see if you’re in town for one of the town’s many festivals.

Lake Tahoe in 1860, named Carnelian Bay for the semi-precious red and yellow stones peppering the shoreline. Today, Carnelian Bay Lake Tahoe is an annual destination for wooden boat enthusiasts coming from around the country for a weekend of cruising with the Concours d’Elegance wooden boat show. Year round, Carnelian Bay is the spot for big Mackinaw trout. The beaches are favorites with dogs, kayakers, Stand Up Paddle boarders and sunset seekers.

Lake Tahoe named Kings Beach after card shark Joe King, who won the town site from George Whittell nearly a century before poker had a cult cable-TV following. This North Lake Tahoe spot wrote the book on mellow vibes. Kings Beach stands in the sun’s path from early morning into the evening, with a signature downtown public beach plus hip shops, restaurants, and side-street vendors. Rent kayaks and paddle boards, or if you want a little more action, venture off on one of the many hiking trails on foot or via bike.

Perched on the shore of Lake Tahoe at the headwaters of the Truckee River (Lake Tahoe’s only outlet), Tahoe City’s mélange of playful year-round activities awaits every visitor. Try the free Sunday afternoon concerts on the beach, and the best golfing deal around at Tahoe City’s nine-hole course. Experience the quiet of the lake while having plenty of entertainment options close by. Enjoy four-star dining, homegrown coffee shops, shopping, galleries, and a leisurely stroll through town on the Lake-view boardwalk.

Today, Donner Summit and the Donner Pass blend its tragic past and forward-looking future. Visit the site of the party that met its tragic fate and also visit the general stores for goods and souvenirs. Cafes and restaurants, hiking trails, biking trails, endless views, fishing guides, sandy beaches, and amazing slopes lure boarders and skiers alike to Sugar Bowl, Norden, and Donner Ski Ranch. The amphitheater of granite at the west end of the lake is lined with rock climbing routes that are among the worlds most famous.

Incline Village is a north Lake Tahoe adventurer’s paradise. In summer, theatergoers soak in the creativity at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival at nearby Sand Harbor. Mountain bikers can get their game on with screamers down the Flume trail, which drains into the Village. Swim in the waters in summer and head to Diamond Peak Ski Area (in the city limits) and Mt. Rocky vistas, alpine trees, and endless blue skies invite you to explore Truckee’s trials by foot or bike. Honestly if all you did was hike or bike during your stay, you wouldn’t exhaust the hundreds of miles of trails at Tahoe National Forest, Donner Memorial State Park, and more. Set off on your own or book a guided trail that winds you through the wilderness.

Put the phone on silent and let the water provide the ultimate soundscape as you cast a line for trout, salmon, and bass. Fly fishing in Truckee is a four-season sport–plan your trip around your preferred catch. Three distinct rivers-the Truckee, Upper Truckee, and Little Truckee–all beckon anglers to test their skills. Spend time at the Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center and Museum to learn about the Native American history of the area as well as the story of the ill-fated pioneers who perished at Donner Pass. Train buffs will relish in the Truckee Railroad Museum (located in a caboose!) and continue onto the Museum of Truckee History in the train station. Step inside one of the West’s only remaining jails at the Old Jail Museum. Art lovers, don’t miss the Truckee Cultural District’s galleries and huge makerspace area.

Come and ski the slopes in winter, then grab a raft and paddle through the snow melt when the weather heats up. The Truckee River sees adventurers battle the rapids and area companies will gear you up and guide you to the river’s most thrilling spots.

Thousands of feet of granite is a climber’s paradise. Scale the vertical walls of Donner Summit or take a lesson at Tahoe Mountain School. Guide companies will have you on the rocks and tailor lessons for all kinds of groups. The best time of year to climb the Truckee area is June through September and always be weather-aware before heading out (and up).
