Kiawah Island, the PGA and your next vacation!

The PGA Tournament came to Kiawah Island, SC the weekend of May 21 and really highlighted how fabulous the entire area is (big congrats to Phil Mickelson!!). It’s no wonder tens of thousands of visitors come to the area each year to take in the abundant sunshine, stroll the shops, soak in the history and, just maybe, get on the Oceans Course for a round of golf. As you plan your next vacation, or plan to buy your next investment property, check out all Kiawah, Folly, Seabrook and Edisto have to offer. Here are just a few things you have to see and do when you are here.

1. Hit the beach…this is the #1 draw for most people living or visiting here. Each beach and beach town, literally, has its own personality so pick what suits you. Better yet, visit them all and decide which beach matches what you want to do.

Here are some of the best beaches in the area:

  • Folly Beach: Eclectic, bohemian and a beach goers beach and beach town. Some say Folly reminds them a little bit of Key West (but, maybe not so chaotic). It’s downright fun and the beaches are perfect for surfing and wind-sailing.
  • Kiawah: Refined, casual luxury is how we describe Kiawah. You can go from being fully pampered in a nearby spa to a relaxing day at the beach to a 5 star dining experience – all within a few hundred yards of one another. And the golfing is, literally, the best in the world (just ask the PGA).
  • Seabrook Island: A tad further south of Kiawah you’ll find the private, gated community available to homeowners and, of course, their guests. Seclusion, privacy and disconnection are top options while enjoying all nature has to offer.
  • Edisto: A well kept secret, Edisto lets you relax and really focus on re-energizing. The salt marshes, beaches and nature trails are amazing and you’ll never see a hotel or even a stop light. Take in the sites as you cross the bridge to your getaway.

2. Snag some fish…If you are even remotely interested in fishing you’ve come to the right place. We have year-round fishing so you’ll always come at a good time. Here are some of the fish you’ll catch depending on the time of year you visit:

Fishing is a year round activity here and every season has it’s rewards. Here are just a few local tips on what and how to fish depending on the season:

  • December – March: Focus on redfish, sheepshead and black drum. The water temperature is pretty cool, so the fish are moving slower. Work your bait or lure slower and focus on staying on the bottom.

  • April – June: Things are heating up and non-native fish are heading in. You’ll likely score some bull reds, tarpon and the occasional shark. Use live bait, fish anywhere from top to bottom and wrangle them in.

  • July – September: It’s hot and it’s game (or fish) on. Be an early bird to catch the most fish as after 10 or 11 you’ll likely hit a dry spell. Use the same techniques and baits as you do in late May and June.

  • October – December: Non-native fish are starting to head out, but you’ll probably max out on your catch with bull redfish and other native species. Move away from live bait and see how artificial lures work for you during these cooling down months.

3. Golfing, sight-seeing and shopping…it’s what you came here for. There are too many options to list here and there is no shortage of, well, anything. Just a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:
