Visit Whitefish

What should we talk about first? The fact that Whitefish was named one of the “Top 25 Ski Towns in the World” by National Geographic? Or should we dissect the Mountain West vibes infusing everything from the local dining scene to the golf courses framed by Rocky Mountain views? Maybe we should set some time aside to chat about the summer thrills like zip‐lining, hiking, lake fun, fly fishing, and biking? We can end our talk with the elevated experiences at the many local restaurants and shops. Whitefish’s historic downtown speaks to the history of the region but decidedly asserts its place in today with restaurants, galleries, and areas to explore. Add in proximity to Glacier National Park and four-season appeal and you’ll soon see why Whitefish has earned its iconic status.

Whitefish Mountain Resort

Located just outside downtown Whitefish and about 30 minutes from Glacier National Park, Whitefish Mountain Resort sits on Big Mountain overlooking Whitefish Lake. It’s known for its laid-back Montana vibe, epic views, and terrain that caters to beginners and experts alike.

Snowfall & Conditions

Whitefish averages 300+ inches of annual snowfall, delivering consistent powder days throughout the season. One of its most iconic features? Cloud inversions—when you ski above the fog layer with blue skies and jaw-dropping views.

Terrain & Trail Breakdown

With over 3,000 skiable acres and 100+ named runs, the mountain offers something for everyone. You’ll find wide groomers for cruisers, gladed tree skiing, terrain parks, and steeper advanced lines off the Summit House lift.

Lifts & Access

The resort features 11 lifts, including high-speed chairs that keep lines moving even on busy weekends. Its layout makes it easy to lap your favorite terrain without trekking across the entire mountain.

Glacier National Park

Known as the “Crown of the Continent,” Glacier National Park is one of the most breathtaking national parks in the United States. With glacial-carved peaks, turquoise lakes, alpine meadows, and over 700 miles of trails, it’s a bucket-list destination for outdoor lovers year-round.

Going-to-the-Sun Road

This iconic 50-mile scenic drive cuts straight through the heart of the park, crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. It’s one of the most scenic drives in North America and a must-do whether you’re visiting for a day or a week.

Hiking & Trails

With 700+ miles of hiking trails, Glacier offers everything from easy lakeside strolls to challenging alpine routes. Popular hikes include Highline Trail, Grinnell Glacier, Hidden Lake, and Avalanche Lake—each offering unreal views.

Glaciers & Wildlife

The park is home to 20+ active glaciers (though they are shrinking), along with incredible wildlife. Visitors often spot mountain goats, bighorn sheep, moose, black bears, and even grizzlies.

Best Time to Visit

Peak season runs from late June through September when Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open. Wildflowers bloom mid-summer, while fall brings fewer crowds and crisp mountain air.

Iconic Lakes

Glacier’s lakes are famous for their crystal-clear water and colorful rock bottoms. Lake McDonald, St. Mary Lake, and Two Medicine offer kayaking, paddleboarding, and jaw-dropping sunset views.

Activities Beyond Hiking

Beyond hiking, visitors can enjoy guided boat tours, whitewater rafting, scenic bike rides, fishing, and even horseback riding through alpine terrain.

Getting There

The park is easily accessible via Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell, about 30 minutes from the west entrance. Visitors can also arrive by train via Amtrak’s Empire Builder route.

Glacier National Park

Mountain climbing, hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing heat up the winter fun at Glacier. Mother Nature might put on her Northern Lights show if you time your visit right. The trails carving through the park and wildflower blooms lining their edges beat the treadmill any day. Tick Avalanche Lake, Grinnell Glacier Trail, Hidden Lake Overlook, Iceberg Lake, and St. Mary and Virginia Falls Trail off your hiking bucket list. Add in biking, boating, horseback riding, and scenic drives for a total Montana adventure.

Historic Downtown

Central Avenue, the beating heart of Historic Downtown Whitefish, pumps life into this Rocky Mountain town. Train buffs and history fans, stop at the Whitefish Depot to learn about the town and the transportation that helped build it. Plenty of eateries tip their hats to the town’s mountain heritage but also have a firm foot in current dining trends. Sip craft brews under the mountains’ gaze or kick back at one of the area’s cafes. Pack a few totes–the shopping opportunities here will have those bags full with artisans finds.

Historic Railway District

See how Stumptown morphed into Skitown with a wander through Whitefish Museum. Bonus? It’s still a working train depot and might make you think you’re in Europe with its Swiss-inspired design. Hit the brakes once you walk to nearby City Beach Park–maybe a picnic lunch is on the calendar? Actually, put the agenda aside and stroll some of the area’s eateries and sip a cocktail under the eye of the Rockies.

Whitefish Lake

Lowkey or full-throttle, summer or winter, Whitefish Lake’s waters serve as the region’s ultimate water playground. Warm weather means plenty of swimming, boating, fishing, and relaxing shoreside. Rent a kayak to sail along the waters or kick back with the group on a pontoon. The crowds might thin, but there’s nothing skimpy about fall and winter here, Fall fishing is where it’s at and bundle up for ice fishing when the temps really dive. Add in trails to explore and rental outfitters to get you on the water for a friction-free stay.

Whitefish Mountain Resort

The place that puts the name in Skitown with 111 trails and 3,000 acres to carve, fly, and play. Four terrain parks amp up the boarding and 11 chairlifts whisk you out of line and onto the slopes. Steel your courage and tackle Hell Fire’s more than two-and-a-half miles or take it easier on one of the gentler hills. Don’t count the resort out in summer. You can still ride the lifts, soar down the mountain on the alpine coater, or conquer the Aerial Adventure Park.

Flathead River

Think of the snow melting as an invitation to practice your angling skills with catch-and-release changes to snag trout and whitefish. Come summer, it’s time to snag cutthroat trout and rainbow trout and you might want to grab a raft because the rapids fire up in spring and summer, making the Flathead an iconic Montana whitewater rafting hub. Swim in the river’s cool waters or kayak and explore nature’s nooks. When winter descends, the river invites you to traverse the adjacent trails or get the camera out to capture this icy wonderland.

Dog Sledding

Sure, skiing the Whitefish range is one way to connect with your inner athlete, but have you carved through the snow fueled only with sled dog power? You’d be remiss not booking a short tour or even full-day dogsledding tour. Multiple outfits host the outings that wind through the Stillwater State Forest. Check this one off your adventure list.

Cross-country Skiing

The slopes don’t have a lock on all of the fun. Try out cross-country skiing at Glacier Nordic Center at Whitefish Golf Course. Explore 12 kilometers ideal for classic and skate skiing. Big Mountain Nordic Trails get daily grooms for pristine adventuring and Glacier National Park’s roads become ski paths when the temps drop. Local rental shops get you on the trails ready to go and if you want a little more guidance, book a tour with local experts.

Snowshoeing

Skiing might be king here but snowshoeing is another way to immerse yourself in winter’s magic. Strap on the snowshoes and enjoy Glacier’s majesty as you trek through the park—rangers offer weekend tours. The Whitefish Trail is another favorite with snowshoers and their canine companions.

Snowmobiling

Ultimate speeds and ultimate thrills await! The Whitefish region boasts some of Montana’s top-tier snowmobiling. With access to Flathead Valley’s 200 miles, you can rev up and fly through piney paths and winter thruways. Guided tours wind through the area’s hottest trails and rentals meet your needs with beginner-friendly equipment to expert-level crafts. Make sure to book in advance for this popular adventure.

Ice Fishing

Check the temps, but generally once the end of December hits, it’s ice fishing go-time. Whitefish Lake and Flathead Lake teem with whitefish, trout, and yellow perch. The lakes around Whitefish supply anglers with a multitude of ice fishing outings. As always, check weather conditions for safety.

Spas and Wellness

Soothe those viscous aches with treatments from one of Whitefish’s immersive wellness experiences. Deep tissue, Swedish, hot stone–it’s all on the menu. The Spa at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake elevates relaxation and its lakeside address boosts the chill vibes. Book a class at one of the town’s yoga studios to round out your zen experiences. Multiple spas and studios make blissing out top priority.

Whitefish Winter Carnival

The Whitefish Winter Carnival might have you hunting for Yetis (and not the cooler kind). Legend has it that after wandering the globe, the Norse God Ullr and his crew set up house in the region only to fend off the Yetis’ challenges. For the first week in February, lean into the fantasy and wonder and test your mettle with the Penguin Plunge. Are you brave enough to dive into the winter waters? Plenty of less frigid events await, including the gala, pie social, and grande parade.

Hiking & Biking

The 47 miles of the Whitefish Trail welcome walkers, runners, and hikers to traverse the natural surface trails, connect with nature, and disconnect from distractions. Only have time for a quick jaunt? Hike the Lion Mountainhead Trail. Once the snow thaws, Whitefish Mountain Resort transforms into a hiker’s paradise. Of course Glacier National Park is a hiker’s must with 700 miles of trails. You can’t walk all of them in one visit, but guided tours mean you can trek the best offerings. Bikers, Whitefish’s elevations max out thrills. The resort caters to mountain bikers in the warmer months and Whitefish explodes with trails to descend.

Fishing

Lakes and rivers, streams and inlets–cast a line and fill your buckets. Whitefish Lake reigns supreme for trout, bass, pike, and perch. Test your luck or charter a guide who knows the lake’s ins and outs. Flathead Lake also boats schools of fish ready to bite and the views rival the catch for sheer awe. Set up a fishing camp at the Flathead River’s Middle Fork and North Fork makes excellent spots for catch-and-release fishing. Check out the river’s Mainstem for looser restrictions. Add the Whitefish River and for fishing Nirvana.

Golfing

Not the run-of-the mill (or run-of-the-course) golfing in Whitefish. Check out the more than ten public and private courses in the region. Whitefish Lake Golf Club’s 36 holes adjoining Whitefish Lake and pristine greens earned the Golf Digest’s top marks. On your way to Glacier, pull off for a tee time at Meadow Lake Golf Course and then circle back to Northern Pines Golf Course to see what it’s like to golf along the Stillwater River. These are just a sampling of clubs where the views might challenge you to take your eye off the ball.

Arts & Culture

Whitefish isn’t merely an outdoor escape. The arts scene in this slice of Montana offers festivals, art, and live music and theatre to infuse your stay with culture. A thriving gallery scene highlights local artists. Think about adding a piece to your collection to remember your time in the Flathead Valley. Let the music pouring out of the restaurants and bars lure you in to sip craft brews and cocktails. Make sure to see what’s on the boards at the Whitefish Theatre Company for musicals, plays, and their summer concert series.

Dining

Hit the Farmer’s Market for fresh finds and hot treats. The foodie culture hums in Whitefish with upscale dining haunts like Herb & Omni, Beldi, and Latitude 48. Local distilleries like Spotted Bear and the burgeoning craft brew scene delight every taste bud.

Huckleberry Days

The fishing and water fun are sweet here, but nothing is as sweet (and a little bit tart) as Montana’s huckleberries that flourish at the end of summer. So beloved, in fact, that Huckleberry Days celebrate the harvest with the Arts and Crafts Festival with more than 100 artisans, huckleberry pancake breakfast, and the “Swim the Fish” event in Whitefish Lake. Save room for huckleberry ice cream!
